Introduction: Roots of Edenton (ROE)

African-American residents from the small town of Edenton, North Carolina and the surrounding communities of Chowan County, have been yearning to reconnect with relatives and family friends throughout the years. Many families moved away from Edenton and migrated to states all over the country. Since 1975, they have been reuniting and bringing new family members to meet one another. ROE Descendants come from states as far west as California, from northern states like Illinois, New York and Connecticut.
This website is a place where all those who have a connection to the Edenton area can share information about their family history. Many of the present and former residents have been doing genealogy research, and have learned that folks who they thought were family friends are actually relatives.
When you research the town of Edenton or Chowan County, there is barely any mention of the African-American residents and their contribution to Edenton's history. Yet when one listens to the elders tell stories at the ROE family reunions, there is a lot of history revealed and it must be recorded.
At our Roots of Edenton events, we conduct informational and genealogy workshops for the attendees. In 2013, we had our first original short film festival by one of our young adult filmmakers. This website will be a place for Roots of Edenton to capture and record history so the next generation will be enriched by our experiences.
